From February 20, 2025, I will take an indefinite time-out with Sand & Lava. So that I can think about whether and how I want to continue Sand & Lava as a hobby.
So for the time being, no new updates on the website, newsletters and also no new posts on social media.
I choose not to give a personal answer to messages/emails during this period. Sometimes you have to completely disconnect from something.
As you can imagine, a lot of time goes into Sand & Lava. In addition to my family and friends, a job, household, odd jobs on our house, staying fit, traveling and other hobbies.
I am not very good at doing something a little, always fully. In the coming period, I choose to make different choices and divide my time differently and see how that works out. After this period (I estimate 3 to 6 months) I will of course let you know what the outcome is via the website, newsletter and social channels.

My name is Lein (officially Marjolein), and I am the creator and face behind the Sand & Lava concept. You'll find more about me later, but first, I'd love to share the philosophy behind Sand & Lava.
Philosophy of Sand & Lava (updated on January 30, 2025):
Sand & Lava is not an average website. It is an experimental playground, a concept that can go in all directions and an expression of my personal style and way of life. Sand & Lava is always in motion, just like the sea and life itself.
In October 2024, the Sand & Lava webshop will be closed and subsequently, in November 2024, sales via Vinted Pro will also be stopped. During that period, the entire site is translated into English. After my vacation in November, I started a new job after more than 20 years of self-employment. With that, Sand & Lava has become a hobby, for which, to be honest, I have less time left than I would like to give "my baby". And speaking of baby, in March I am expecting my first grandchild. Also a new phase, and I expect even less time for Sand & Lava.
I love to inspire in style, to show that boho island style is for everyone, no matter the size or age. I loved making paper dolls, and now I love making AI images. The great thing about AI is that the clothes aren’t specifically for sale anywhere. It’s more about “what do you have in your closet that you can create a similar outfit with?” Can you make something yourself or pimp it? Swap or borrow? Buy second-hand? But if you prefer to buy new, that’s okay too. I support more sustainable and conscious consumption, but I also buy partly new. Just like I’m not vegan, but I do eat mainly plant-based food. To me, being more sustainable and conscious is not about perfection, but about awareness. And yes, even though I’ve been inspired by a whole legion of minimalists on YouTube for years, my wardrobe is still bulging. Work in progress.
I’m 53 and have great admiration for the younger generations. They are actually the main source of inspiration for Sand & Lava. They teach us that you don't have to do just one thing, that not everything revolves around money. You don't have to pigeonhole yourself and your projects. Everything can fall under the Sand & Lava umbrella. You have to base your work on your core values and talents. Style and clothing is my passion, it was my job for over 20 years, and now it's (again) a hobby. Because why stop doing something that's fun to do, if you don't earn anything (anymore) with it? And given the many followers on social media, the many newsletter registrations and website visitors, you apparently like it too😁.
About me:
First the facts... Lein (Marjolein), 53, I have been an independent entrepreneur in children's and women's fashion since 2003. I have been together with the love of my life, Ries (Richard), for 34 years and I am the mother of a wonderful adult daughter. We have been living in Bellingwolde, the Netherlands for 21 years now. I have a background in business support and management positions in the corporate world. And since December 2024 I have been working as an internal commercial employee at a large nursery for tropical plants and houseplants. I am creative, a true Gemini, and I love dancing, yoga, cooking, reading and travelling. I spend as much time as possible on sunny islands, with my feet in the sand. Although I am not averse to city trips or sunny places that are not on an island😉 All that travelling is fantastic for the soul and much more, but yes, less good for the environment. I know that. Like many people, the dream is a permanent place in the sun, preferably on an island. And to leave it as little as possible. I have not yet found the right island, so the search continues. I do not like the cold. I only defrost above 25 degrees😬😁.
